Colour is only 5 weeks away!! Colour is the annual women’s conference at Hillsong. It will be my first Colour Conference and I am really excited about the speakers – especially Priscilla Shirer! We started making the invitations 2 weeks ago – all 8,000 of them! and distrbuted some of them last week during Sisterhood!
One of the projects that Coulour will be headlining is READBABYREAD which is the new literacy initiative that our Foundation has just launched in partnership with schools in underprivileged areas in Cape Town. We aim to reach the schools of Africa by equipping classrooms with literacy resources, strengthening teachers through professional development trainings and encouraging children, teachers and parents through a school reading campaign, mentorship and support, SHINE, and playgroups – a program we run for parents with young children to facilitate discussion on parenting and early childhood development.
Its awesome because we are getting recognition globally from the Colour Conference; and for them to jump on board and include us in their project to support READBABYREAD is awesome! The project is called the Colour500 project. The goal is to donate anything up to 500. Meaning 500 books, dollars, rand, euros, – anything you please to go towards this literacy project! The resources will go towards training and developing teachers as well as equipping the schools with literacy resources. Most of these children have no books at home or in the classroom. If you choose to donate books, we have a catalogue of 500 books that were selected by the schools we are working with. You can choose your favorite book; or your childs favorite book!
The future of READBABYREAD will be branching into all parts of Africa. In many areas, less than ten percent of the children know how to read; which will hinder them in future employment opportunities and growing to their full potential. Literacy equals freedom! With the freedom of basic literacy, they will be able to branch out and move forward into greater opportunities in life; that would have hindered them if they were unable to read or write.
READBABYREAD is more than just equipping the children education wise, but spiritually wise. Many of the children have personal challenges and we could teach them about God and say that he Has a plan for them, but it will be difficult for us to do that if they are unable to read for themselves and get spiritually fed. In the longrun it will be eternally valuable. They will not only be able to read their school books, but also there Bible!
ACTIONBABYACTION
If you would like to jump on board and give towards this project you can no matter what part of the world you live in! Some fun ways you can save to make a donation:
1. Instead of buying a new designer wardrobe – organize a clothing swap with friends.
2. Stop your gym membership and use the outdoors to excercise.
3. Do your own hair, mani and pedis.
4. Always carry a water bottle so you don’t have to stop and buy water.
5. Cook only at home (no eating out) – have potluck gatherings to mix it up.
The project is simple.
If you would like to donate a book:
1. Jump online www.coloursisterhood.com.
2. Pick a book from the catalogue.
3. Follow the link and purchase from the site (just set up your own account).
4. Ship to the address listed on the catalogue.
5. Pray for the child that will be reading this book.
If you live in Cape Town and would like to volunteer click here.
You can volunteer by:
* Supporting the school reading campaign by reading to and encouraging children who need extra support to catch up or excel.
* Providing encouragement to teachers – prayer, monthly phone calls, sending treats to the school etc.
* Shine course – help by facilitating, co – facilitating or attending these courses in the communities.
* Encourage young parents by helping to facilitate a playgroup.
And you can always pray! Please pray for the children and teachers to have the supplies, resource and training needed to teach and learn.
I am really excited about this project and getting these resources in the communities hands. I or you can’t do it all by yourself, but if we all come together and put something in whether it be our time, resources, or knowledge. We can, and we WILL make a difference!
Jeremiah 29:11 “ For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Juliette
