Mitchell’s Plain and Tembaletu School outreach

We go to Mitchell’s Plain on Wednesdays and Tembaletu School on Thursdays. (Soon, each of us will be assigned to one of these projects.) On Wednesday we went to Mitchells Plain and I knew that was definitely where I wanted to serve. HAF has started a nutrition program in Lost City and we distributed 450 meals to children and families there. We danced, we prayed, we played, and we gave out food. It was not just giving out meals that stirred my heart, but interacting, smiling and showing people the love and heart of Christ.

Lost City is a disadvantaged community within Mitchell’s Plain. It broke my heart to hear that some parents give there children meal suppresent tablets because they can’t afford to feed their children. For many, the food we passed out was their only meal for the day. Some children as young as 4 will walk 2 miles just to get food. This is a weekly program. After we feed the community, we had church together in the community hall in Tafelsig. Hillsong will officially be starting a weekly Sunday service there in March. (HAF launched the nutrition program in 2011, started a weekly Wednesday service 6 months later, and now we will be planting a church there in a month’s time.) It’s not just about passing out food, it’s about building community, establishing relationships, and giving hope. We are not just here once a week, we are here to stay.

The next day we went to Tembaletu, which is a school for children with physical disabilities. We painted with them for Valentine’s day. One of the children is unable to use his hands to draw or write, so he places the paintbrush in his mouth and draws beautifully. How resoursecful and awesome is this little one! I also helped them with there homework during the session. A few of the children could not speak as clearly as others, however the communication barrier didn’t hinder us one bit. I really stepped out of my comfort zone and served them as much as I could. I was really surprised to see how I could communicate more effectively with the children who had speech impairments to those who could speak clearly! They are all such stars! It was the connections that I made with those children, that softened my heart and humbled me beyond expectation.

Some of the girls showed us their dormitory rooms in Hillsong House and they are so pretty! Hillsong House was built out of the need for the children to stay at the school because they would travel long distances, often through dangerous settings, in order to get to school. Its a safe place where they can stay so they won’t have to travel so far. So not only is Tembaletu a school where they can learn and grow, its a place where they call home.
